GroupWise is a workflow collaboration product designed for e-mail, calendaring, instant messaging, contact management, document management and workflow components. GroupWise is a component of Novell's Nterprise services, which the company aims at enterprises looking for systems to improve employee productivity, communication and network management capabilities.
Novell has positioned GroupWise as a competitor to Microsoft's own Exchange product. Novell says it's cheaper for companies now using Exchange 5.5 to migrate to GroupWise than it is for them to upgrade to newer solutions from Microsoft. Currently, Mac OS X users wishing to integrate with Exchange-based workflows are waiting for an upgrade to Microsoft's Entourage v.X to allow them to do so. It's expected to be released later this year.
GroupWise's forthcoming Macintosh client support leverages Java, and has been made possible through the use of technology that Novell acquired from Newcomp Computer Systems division N-iX.
