HipChat was a web service for internal private online chat and instant messaging. As well as one-on-one and group/topic chat, it also featured cloud-based file storage, video calling, searchable message-history and inline-image viewing. The software was available to download onto computers running Windows, Mac or Linux, as well as Android and iOSsmartphones and tablets.[1][2] Since 2014, HipChat has used a freemium model, as much of the service is free with some additional features requiring organizations to pay per month.[3] HipChat was launched in 2010 and acquired by Atlassian in 2012. In September 2017, Atlassian replaced the cloud-based HipChat with a new cloud product called Stride, with HipChat continuing on as the client-hosted HipChat Data Center.[4]
In July 2018, Slack announced they would acquire HipChat and migrate remaining users to the Slack Chat Platform by February 2019.[5]

History[edit]
HipChat was founded by Chris Rivers, Garret Heaton, and Pete Curley, who studied together at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and also created HipCal and Plaxo Pulse. They launched the first HipChat beta on December 13, 2009.[6][7]
HipChat was made available to the public starting January 25, 2010.[8][9][1]
On March 22, 2010, HipChat launched a web chat beta which allowed users to chat via the browser in addition to the existing Windows, Mac and Linux client.[10] HipChat's web client came out of beta and SMS chat support was added on April 16, 2010.[11] On May 12, 2010, HipChat unveiled its official API.[12] HipChat is mainly written in PHP and Python using the Twistedsoftware framework, but uses other third-party services.[13][14]
On July 19, 2010, the team moved into an office in Sunnyvale, California.[15] Co-founder Pete Curley announced that HipChat had secured $100,000 in funding on August 10, 2010.[16][17] This round of seed funding allowed the company to start advertising and cover operational costs.[18]
HipChat launched their iOS app on March 4, 2011 and their Android app on June 2, 2011.[19][20]
On March 7, 2012, Atlassian, which had been using the service internally, announced it had acquired HipChat.[21]

On April 24, 2017, HipChat experienced a hacking incident in which user info, messages, and content were accessed.[22]
On May 11, 2017, Atlassian announced HipChat Data Center, a self-hosted enterprise chat tool.[23]

On September 7, 2017, Atlassian discontinued the cloud-based HipChat, replacing it with HipChat's successor, called Stride, which offers additional features to enhance efficiency of collaboration.[24] The client-hosted HipChat Data Center continues to be supported.
Integration with Slack[edit]
On July 26, 2018, Atlassian announced that HipChat and Stride would be discontinued February 15, 2019, and that it had reached a deal to sell their intellectual property to Slack.[25] Slack will pay an undisclosed amount over three years to assume the user bases of the services, and Atlassian will take a minority investment in Slack. The companies also announced a commitment to work on integration of Slack with Atlassian services.[26][4]
Features[edit]
The primary features of HipChat are chat rooms, one-on-one messaging, searchable chat history, image sharing, 5 GB of file storage, and SMS messaging for one-on-one conversations. A premium version adds video calling, screen sharing, unlimited file storage, history retention controls, and a virtual machine version allows HipChat to run within corporate firewalls.[3][27] A guest access mode allows users outside of the organization to join a group chat via a shareable URL. Inline GIF playback and custom emoticons are also available.[28][29][30] The product is available as a mobile client, a web client and a downloadable native application.[31]

HipChat Data Center is Atlassian's self-hosted team communication offering. Hipchat Data Center was built for large, enterprise customer that need to store their data on premise. Hipchat Data center offers active-active clustering, 24/7 support, technical account management, SAML 2.0 SSO, multiple deployment offerings, and integrations for internal systems, 3rd party products, and Atlassian products.[32]
In addition to integration with Atlassian's other products, HipChat integrates with services such as GitHub, MailChimp and Heroku.[33] To allow for more third-party integrations to be added, HipChat features a REST interface with several language-specific implementations.[34]
Administrators can access 1-to-1 chat histories if the customer's company policies permit viewing of employee communications.[35] There is no way for an individual or organization to opt out of this data collection/exposure.[36]

Hipchat Desktop Client

HipChat has done a whole lot of overhauling when it comes to its desktop and mobile clients over the past year, and now the native Mac app, which was released as a beta on February 14, is getting its full 2.0 launch today. Alongside that, HipChat is also launching version 2.0 for iOS, another native overhaul, and both show ample evidence of the progress the group chat and collaboration app has made since its acquisition by Atlassian last year.
HipChat co-founder Pete Curley told me all about the changes made to both apps, which include a lot of behind-the-scenes improvements focusing on stability and performance, as well as totally new user interfaces that offer things like vertical tab navigation on the Mac for active chats, Notification Center support and more. The HipChat for iOS revamp adds quick switching between open rooms via a lefthand sidebar; file, link and chat history plus search; new swipe gestures like those you’ll find in system apps in iOS 7; and much more convenient photo sharing.

The update should also drastically improve performance, and will be especially welcome for users of HipChat on iPads, according to Curley. Those who’ve used the previous versions of HipChat for iOS are definitely in for a pleasant surprise. And for Android users, the update that arrived mid-month in April is still a huge improvement, though Curley says now the HipChat mobile team is working on bringing the improvements from this iOS release back to that platform, too.
“I’m extremely surprised at the number of enterprise people using chat on their tablets these day,” Curley said, talking about the need for an iPad-specific overhaul in particular. And the rest of the decisions made were also geared around trends that are changing in terms of mobile app usage. Interfaces on the new app are much better tailored to control systems that have gotten more common. Design language for apps has changed considerably since the advent of iOS, and the new apps feel much more at home as a result. And as for going native on the desktop, it was a case of necessity to suit the changing needs of its customers.
“From the business side of things, Air was really good at getting us, from a three-person team, a product out the door that was running on every operating system, which is crazy to think that we had one guy program that and had 10s of thousands of paid users on that,” Curley said. “The product was able to be used by teams much larger than we’d anticipated, like Netflix, which has switched almost entirely to it, Air wasn’t designed for that and started leaving a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths.”
Email Client For Mac
HipChat also recently decided to open up a free trial tier for teams of up to five users, and I asked Curley about the progress of that project. New sign-ups have tripled, he says, and there are now 2,500 teams using that free service level, all of which are opportunities for paid conversions down the road if they grow beyond their current size. Curley said that while they offered a free tier in the past and got rid of it because people seemingly didn’t use it all that much, this time around the offer is driving plenty of new business, which may be a factor of HipChat’s intervening maturation as a platform.
